Painting in oils
I don’t know when I first got to see an oil painting in person that spoke to me, but around the rise of JUXTAPOZ magazine in the 90’s I remember thinking that I would like to give oils a try. After some frustratingly epic failures to do it on my own, I gave up on it until I moved to Monterey, CA in the early 2000’s and had the good luck to meet Andrew Jackson, a painter and owner of Outer Edge Studio. Andrew inadvertently became one of the biggest influences in my artistic journey. Andrew is an amazing painter and his understanding of color is truly mind blowing. We became friends and he offered to teach me to paint and a spot in his studio in trade for a tattoo sleeve. It’s still the best trade I’ve ever made. I love working in oils but also it is an incredibly frustrating and complicated medium. I truly believe I will spend the rest of my days on this planet trying to find my voice with this medium.
